Discover the magic of Bir Billing – the paragliding capital of India. Visit this offbeat destination, for its adventures and cosy cafes.
Nestled in the serene Kangra Valley of Himachal Pradesh, Bir Billing is renowned as the paragliding capital of India. Popularly known as ‘Parindon Ki Nagri (the town of birds)’, it sees nearly 350-400 tourists each day during peak season, and is considered one of “safest” paragliding sites in the country. This picturesque destination offers not only thrilling paragliding experiences but also a tranquil environment perfect for relaxation and exploration. Bir and Billing are twin towns, with Bir at the top and Billing near the landing site. Whether you are an adventure enthusiast or a peace seeker, Bir Billing has something to offer for everyone. Here’s a complete travel guide to help you plan your visit to this enchanting place.
Reaching Bir Billing
Bir Billing is well-connected by road, and the journey itself is a scenic delight. The nearest major city is Dharamshala, about 70 kilometres away. If you’re travelling from Delhi, it’s approximately 500 kilometres and takes around 12-14 hours by road. Alternatively, you can take a flight to Kangra Airport in Dharamshala, which is the closest airport, and then hire a taxi to Bir Billing. We reached Billing from Kasol as it was a part of our 2 weeks Himachal Pradesh trip and on the way we visited Parashar lake which is both religious and ecological.
Upon arrival, you’ll notice that Bir and Billing, though often mentioned together, are distinct in their geography. Bir is at the top, while Billing is at the bottom near the landing site for paragliders housing most of the hotels and cafes. A beautiful sunset welcomed us at Billing and I personally knew that this place is going to be extra special.
The best time to visit Bir Billing is from March to May and October to November. During these months, the weather is pleasant, making it ideal for paragliding and exploring the scenic beauty of the region. Spring and autumn offer clear skies and moderate temperatures, perfect for both adventure enthusiasts and those looking to relax in nature.
Stay at Bir High
For accommodation, we chose Bir High, a cosy hotel located right next to the landing point. This strategic location allows you to witness paragliders gracefully descending against the backdrop of the setting sun. The hotel offers comfortable rooms with modern amenities, ensuring a pleasant stay. The staff is warm and hospitable, making you feel at home from the moment you arrive.
Paragliding Adventure
The Paragliding Process
The next day is dedicated to the highlight of your trip – paragliding. The experience starts with a short drive from Billing to Bir, which takes about 20-30 minutes. Once at the takeoff site in Bir, you’ll be briefed by professional instructors about the paragliding process. Safety is paramount, and all necessary precautions are taken to ensure a secure flight. We booked our paragliding through our hotel Bir High.
The Thrill of Paragliding
As you prepare for takeoff, the anticipation builds. The instructor helps you gear up with a harness and helmet, and once you’re ready, you take a few steps forward and the parachute lifts you off the ground. The initial rush of adrenaline as you leave the earth is exhilarating.
Once airborne, the sensation of soaring through the skies is indescribable. The panoramic views of the Dhauladhar mountain range and the lush green valley below are breathtaking. The flight lasts about 20-30 minutes, giving you ample time to take in the majestic scenery. The peace and quiet up in the air, combined with the thrill of flight, make for an unforgettable experience.
Cost of Paragliding
The cost of paragliding in Bir Billing ranges from INR 2,500 to INR 3,500, depending on the duration of the flight and the services offered. This typically includes transportation to the takeoff site, safety gear, and the flight itself. The videography and photography charges are additional. The cost is more or less the same with all centres.

Evening at The Northern Cafe
In the evening, we went to The Northern Cafe to unwind and watch the sunset. The cafe offers a variety of drinks and snacks, making it an ideal spot to chill and enjoy the beautiful views of paragliders landing against the setting sun. The relaxed vibe and scenic surroundings make it a favourite hangout for travellers.
