Planning your first trip to Langkawi? This detailed Langkawi travel guide covers how to reach the island, top things to do, beaches, tours, transport options, duty-free shopping, costs, and practical tips for a smooth visit.
If you’re looking for a tropical island in Southeast Asia that’s beautiful, relaxed, affordable, and not overwhelmingly crowded, Langkawi should be on your list. Located off the northwest coast of Malaysia, Langkawi is known for its stunning beaches, lush rainforests, duty-free shopping, and laid-back vibe — making it perfect for first-time visitors to Malaysia.
This Langkawi travel guide covers everything you need to know before planning your trip — from how to reach and where to stay to what to do and practical travel tips.
Where Is Langkawi & How to Reach
Langkawi is an archipelago of 99 islands located in the Andaman Sea, off the northwest coast of Malaysia, close to the Thailand border. Its strategic location makes it a fantastic entry point if you’re combining southern Thailand and Malaysia in one trip — which is exactly what we did.
✈️ By Air
Langkawi International Airport (LGK) is well connected to:
- Kuala Lumpur
- Penang
- Singapore (seasonal/direct flights)
Flights from Kuala Lumpur are short and convenient, making Langkawi easy to include in a Malaysia itinerary.
🚢 By Ferry
You can also reach Langkawi by ferry from:
- Penang
- Kuala Perlis / Kuala Kedah
Ferries are a scenic option but take longer than flying and this option works well if you’re already exploring mainland Malaysia and want to add Langkawi to your itinerary.
Personal Experience: We covered South Thailand and Malaysia in a single itinerary and entered Malaysia through Langkawi by ferry from Koh Lipe, Thailand. This is a popular and surprisingly smooth route for travelers island-hopping across borders.
The ferry ride from Koh Lipe to Langkawi takes around 90 minutes, including immigration formalities at both ends. Immigration at Langkawi is well-organized, and the entire process was straightforward, making Langkawi one of the easiest places to enter Malaysia by sea.
💡 If you’re planning Thailand–Malaysia island hopping, Langkawi is one of the most convenient and scenic border crossings.
Best Time to Visit Langkawi
The best time to visit Langkawi is from November to April, when the weather is dry and sunny.
- Peak Season: December to February (best weather, higher prices)
- Shoulder Season: March & April and October -November (good balance of weather + fewer crowds)
- Monsoon Season: May to September (more rain, but greener landscapes and lower prices)
💡 Langkawi is a year-round destination, but island hopping and water activities are best outside the monsoon months. We visited in late October which was perfect, except for a half day of rain.
